Warriors, join us in congratulating our first members of the month, Emily Copeland and Rick Rodriguez! We asked them to share a little bit about their time here at Mighty Warrior and we hope you enjoy their answers as much as we did!
What’s been your proudest moment at Mighty Warrior?
Rick: Every “FIRST”. My first pull-up, My first toes to bar, double-under….
Emily: Probably my proudest moment at Mighty Warrior was at the 2018 Open. I only had a couple of months of CrossFit experience, but one of the moves in the WOD was an rx pull-up. Coach Staci told me to try a kipping pull-up, even though I had never even attempted one before. I went for it and tried one, actually completing the rep. Then, went on to do 18 more. I’m forever grateful to Staci for pushing me to do it and then believing that I could do more. It was a really wild moment for me because it was something that was in my sights down the road, so to not only do one rep, but 19 was big for me!
What’s your favorite workout?
Rick: Anything not burpees! Shoulders to overhead (strict press, push or jerk). I found out recently that I can row.
Emily: My very favorite barbell movement is a power clean/hang clean. I love the feeling of keeping the bar close and moving it quickly! I’m currently falling in love with hand-stand pushups, too. I enjoy body-weight movement because that’s comfortable for me, so learning how to increase weight with a barbell/kettlebell has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way!
What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to start CrossFit?
Rick: I remember when I started and watching everyone else FLY through all of the movements which for me, at the time, were impossible. Like a toddler watching an adult running and thinking: “ I am NEVER going to be able to do THAT.” Slowly over time and with work it has been SO gratifying to add new skills to my tool bag. I have come to realize that I am not “competing” with anyone else at the gym. Those people motivate, encourage, and push me, but I am competing against the worst parts of ME.
Emily: For the person hesitant to try CrossFit, I would first tell them that the muscles they see on others in the gym have come from years of training (and intentional diet), so keep your eyes on your own transformation. It’s YOU against yourself with the goal of getting stronger for LIFE. Once you let go of the intimidation of what CrossFit seems to be and you embrace it for what it really is, you will experience change and growth that you never knew was possible. CrossFit makes every person an athlete regardless of their starting point, and who doesn’t want to say that about themselves?
What’s a fun fact about you that most Warriors might not know?
Rick: Love my morning peeps! Their presence at the gym, just them being there at the butt-crack of dawn helps me stay committed!
Emily: Fun fact? Well, I spent years doing Pilates trying to avoid putting on muscle (by preference, but also as a part of my job) so now, I’m working extra hard to grow muscles that I was never allowed to have!
What’s the next goal you’re looking to achieve?
Rick: Hand stand push-ups
Emily: My next goal is to continue increasing the weight of my barbell movements. I would also like to improve my pull-ups so that at some point I can learn the movement of a bar muscle-up. Gaining the upper body strength for that is my goal this year!
Come one, come all. Is CrossFit really for everyone?
